In June last year we held a big Beach event to celebrate our Beach Camps 2nd Birthday. It was here I remember meeting Jacqui properly, she had a lot of reservations about what she could achieve but marched on though the session and did incredibly well.

The event was in aid of Cullercoats RNLI the meeting point of our Beach Camp sessions 3x per week for the past (almost) 3 years. Jacqui is part of Cullercoats RNLI fundraising team which holds a huge part of Ocean Fits heart, for many reasons.

It was in September last year Jacqui started with us on our 6 week Body Confidence Programme, she had doubts about what she could achieve but absolutely soared from week 1 – 6. I can visualise the constant improvements. She is full of determination, character and enthusiasm each session.

In December 2018 Jacqui broke her wrist and was unable to attend sessions for 6  weeks, this was a huge upset to us as she had been doing so so well up until tat point. This is where a lot of people would throw the towel in. Jacqui got back involved in January knowing that what she could achieve would be different to before her injury as weight couldn’t be applied through her wrists. But with regular adaptations and perseverance Jacqui made the most of each session like every other member. She is now putting body weight into her wrists again and building up her strength rapidly.

BUT what really made me see Jacqui as our Client of the month was when one of our Beach Campers slipped to the back of the pack and Jacqui looped back to run with them. No man left behind. This was great to see as a coach and just put into perception how strong our Ocean Fit Teams are.

So….Check out her story below.

Name: Jacqui McGuire
Age: 50
When did you Start and why?
I started with Body Confidence Programme last summer.  I’d just hit 50 and felt I should make some effort to start looking after myself.  The only exercise I did was walk the dog so I knew I had a lot of work to do to get fit.  I had taken part in a beach camp session that Aaron had organised as a fundraiser for the RNLI and I really enjoyed it.
What do you enjoy the most over all about taking part?
The
camaraderie of the group and the feeling of achievement at the end of each session. I never really realised that getting fit could be fun!
What made you choose Ocean Fit?
I knew Aaron a little bit from all the charity work he does for the RNLI and I liked the thought of doing something outdoors. The taster session nailed it for me.  Love being outdoors and working with others.

Beach Camps 2nd Birthday 2018

What is your biggest achievement?
It sounds silly but when I first started I couldn’t do a star jump because it killed my knees – after a couple of months I realised I was doing it without wincing!
What is your favorite exercise or move & why?
You’re not talking about lifting glasses of Prosecco are you? I guess that doesn’t count.  Don’t tell anyone but I actually quite like the ramp at the beach.
What is your LEAST favourite exercise & why?
Well, nobody likes a burpee do they?
Would you recommend us to a friend and why?
I have many times!  I love the fact that there are all levels of ability in our group.  Everyone is friendly.  If you want to be competitive and push yourself you can but no one is judging you.
Whats your favourite thing to cook?
Chilli crusted baked salmon – go to dinner in our house. or I do a mean fish pie.

What is your biggest achievement to date?
I think coming back from fractured wrist (fell over and broke it in November).  It was like starting again but I am starting to see progress.  I can do some press ups now and am working to increase the strength every day.
I had set myself a challenge of walking to the north pole in 2020 but having recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis in the spine I’m not permitted to take part.  I’m looking for something big that I can work towards now and Beach Camp will help me prepare for whatever that turns out to be.  If you’ve got any ideas please let me know.
Describe Ocean Fit in 1 sentence?
The place to get fit and have fun at the same time – working out and watching the sun come up – you can’t get better than that!
Any additional comments – memories, funny moments etc..

The pumpkin workout will always stick in my mind.  Aaron had filled his car with pumpkins and we each had to choose one and carry it with us for the whole session.  My arms have never hurt so much!  But we did get to take them home and make soup.  Really good fun and so unexpected!
